Five or so years ago, I was in Winston-Salem, a city that, even for a southern city, is in love with its past. They were celebrating the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the restoration of Salem, the part of the city founded in 1766. For this anniversary, they were trying to evoke, not the early days, but early 50's. There were only period cars on the streets, many women were wearing "the new look". Krispy Kreme donuts were being given away in the restored garden that is on the site of the first KK store. It was like waking back into my own childhood, and also, because of all the restoration, like waking in the late eighteen century and walking in the present all at once. It was a very magic moment.
