One interesting thing I noticed when I was doing research for my final paper is that there seems to be a much more common version of the poem called "Song for Ookpik," which definitely puts the poem in a more Canadian context. The copy of the book I got from my local library was published in the US -- I wonder if Ookpik just seemed too Canadian a word?

I’m with you, Nora! I hate this book too. I’m not a huge Robert Munsch fan to begin with–I love The Paperbag Princess and that’s about it–but this one just drives me crazy. I used to cringe when people came to the bookstore I worked at and wanted to buy it as a baby gift. There’s just something about this book…

The toned down version of the book was used in schools primarily–teachers and TLs who didn’t want to rock the boat. I have read both versions–the tame version is pretty watered down and not very good. This version is definitely better, and certainly appropriate for older readers/YAs.

Interesting…I’m not familiar with this book, so I’m glad that you included it. I love how you included your debate about whether it is ‘Canadian’…and I agree that ultimately the reader has to decide if it is ‘Canadian enough’–the unique setting certainly qualifies in my book too!

This was, and continues to be, one of my favourite series! I read it and loved it as a kid and then continue to re-read and think about the 3 books in the trilogy from time to time. I can’t wait until my own daughter is old enough to read and enjoy them!

I love Polly Horvath! She’s so interesting because she is American but has lived in Canada for a long time. Her quirky books are so much fun to read…my favourites are The Trolls and Everything on a Waffle!

I loved this book as a kid–although I agree with you this cover is dated. My ‘original’ cover (I still have the book in my collection) is different–blues and much more muted tones, as I recall. It’s too bad so many of these great books will no doubt get passed over because kids don’t like the look of the older covers.
